The United Nations Security Council unanimously passed Resolution number (2118) regarding the massacre perpetrated by the “regime” in Eastern Ghouta and the disarmament of chemical weapons from Syria <\/p>\n\n
On September 14, 2013, the Bashar al-Assad regime formally signed the Convention on the Prohibition of Development, Production, Stockpiling, and Use of Chemical Weapons and Destruction, declaring its commitment to the stipulations outlined within the convention. <\/p>\n\n
On November 22, 1968, Syria acceded to the Protocol for the Prohibition of the Use of Asphyxiating, Poisonous, or Other Gases, and Bacteriological Methods of Warfare, signed in Geneva on June 17, 1925. <\/p>\n\n
Article 21 of Resolution 2118 strictly prohibits and criminalises the use of chemical weapons, according to Article 7 of the United Nations Charter. <\/p>\n\n
The Security Council’s resolution includes procedures to expedite the dismantling of the Syrian government’s chemical weapons program and subject it to strict verification. It also calls for quick, safe, and full implementation. <\/p>\n\n
The resolution bans Damascus from using, developing, producing, stockpiling, retaining, or transferring chemical weapons directly or indirectly to other states or non-state entities. <\/p>\n\n
It authorises an advanced team of United Nations staff to provide early assistance to the activities of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in Syria.<\/p>\n\n
It demands that the Director-General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and the Secretary-General cooperate in implementing the decision of the Executive Council<\/p>\n\n
It also strongly condemns any use of chemical weapons in the Syrian Arab Republic, particularly the attack that occurred on August 21, 2013, as a violation of international law.
