This report was released on September 13, 2013, several months after assembling the United Nations mission to investigate the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

The mission focused on the areas of Eastern Ghouta, which were targeted with a large-scale attack on August 21, 2013, causing the deaths of approximately 1,500 victims.

The UN mission managed to access the areas affected by chemical attacks in Moadamiyeh, Ain Tarma, Zamalka, and Eastern Ghouta.

The mission concluded that chemical weapons were used on a large scale in Syria, obtaining conclusive evidence of the use of chemical weapons in Eastern Ghouta against civilians, including children

The mission affirmed that the environmental and chemical evidence gathered proved the use of surface-to-surface missiles loaded with Sarin gas in Ain Tarma, Moadamiyah, and Zamalka.

The report was attached with photos and evidence from survivors. It expressed concern about the conclusions.

It’s important to know that the United Nations team was not in charge of attributing responsibility for the use of chemical weapons. Their mission was only limited to confirm or disprove the occurrence of such use.
